Former US National Security Advisor and former Trump partner John Bolton has said that the Tariff Washington imposed on India by President Donald Trump will bring the worst results. This has caused further New Delhi to the US and the US efforts to remove Russia and China have failed. He said that the move has had the opposite effect, which has made relations with India stressful, while China has not made any difference, and the US has weakened an important target. Bolton pointed to a heavy tariff on New Delhi to buy Russian oil and accused Trump of preferring China instead of India. He described it as a possible ‘big mistake’.

Trump waged a brief trade war against China in April, but since then he has avoided to increase it, as an agreement is pending. He has imposed 50 percent tariff on India. Talking to ‘CNN’, Bolton said that it is ironic that the tariff, which was imposed with the intention of damaging Russia, can bring India closer to Russia and China, and perhaps motivate them to interact against the US. He said, “Trump’s softening of China and heavy tariffs on India, threatening the decades -old American efforts to remove India from Russia and China.”

In an editorial for The Hill, Bolton stated that Trump’s soft attitude towards Beijing could be seen as sacrificing American strategic interests in eagerness to compromise with President Xi Jinping. He wrote, “It seems that the White House is on tariff rates and other standards with Beijing to be more softened than in New Delhi. If this is, it will be a big mistake.” Trump’s additional tariff has so far failed to persuade India to stop buying Russian oil. India has made it clear that we will continue to take the decision in the national interest.
