Cambodia and Thailand on Thursday signed an agreement to formalize the ceasefire system. The decision was taken after a special General Border Committee (GBC) meeting held in the capital of Malaysia. According to the Cambodian side, the two countries held a detailed discussion about the ceasefire and agreed to establish a regional surveillance mechanism, restore mutual confidence and behave under the international human law with captured soldiers.

At the same time, the Thai Paksha said that the two countries have agreed to maintain dialogue and resolve the dispute through bilateral mechanisms. In addition, ASEAN member countries will be allowed to monitor the ceasefire. The two countries also decided that the next special GBC meeting would be held within a month.

Meanwhile, on August 6, a spokesman for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry described Thailand’s legal action for violating its sovereignty through military force and arms on Cambodia as baseless and politically motivated. Foreign Ministry Secretary and Spokesperson Chum Saunri said that this legal step is completely baseless and an attempt to distract domestic and international attention from Thailand’s anti-Cambodia policies. He said, “The allegations are not baseless, politically motivated and based on any concrete evidence.” Saunri clarified that Cambodia did not start the clash and he is committed to peace. He said that despite the frequent abolition, Cambodia is fully committed to the ceasefire agreement.

The spokesman said, “Cambodia appeals to Thailand to stop false propaganda and hostile activities and return to creative dialogue with peaceful co-existence and ASEAN unity.” Significantly, on July 24, there were clashes between the soldiers of Cambodia and Thailand in their disputed border area. After this, on July 28, in the afternoon, the two countries agreed on the ceasefire, which became effective from midnight on the same day.
