India is playing a leading role in the world of digital payments, and now another major change can be revealed. Soon the need for PIN for UPI transaction in the country may be over. Instead, payment can be done with biometric verification like fingerprint, face ID and iris scan. NPCI is working on this new technology and can be launched for common users in future.
This step will be especially beneficial for users who feel difficulty in remembering UPI PIN, or are less educated. Through biometric payment, fraud will also be prevented to a large extent as this system will be based on unique bio data.
How to do biometric payment?
According to Business Standard, under this system, the user will no longer need to enter PIN for UPI payments. Instead, the user will be able to pay through its biometric identity such as fingerprint, face scan or iris scan. This feature is especially considered beneficial for those users who have difficulty in remembering PIN or which are backward in digital literacy.
Payment process can be done in this way:
After scanning the QR code, the option of biometric verification will come instead of pin.
– Payment will be automatically confirmed by verifying fingerprint scanner or phone from faceID.
– The direct link to Aadhaar and NPCI will make this process possible, so that transaction will remain secure and easy.
Talk of safety and security
The biometric -based payment system is considered safe as it connects the user’s personal data (eg fingerprint and face details) directly to the UPI transaction. This makes it almost impossible to pay by someone else. However, some cyber experts are also saying that the possibility of biometric data leaking should also be taken seriously. For this, the government and NPCI are already working on necessary security measures. All biometric data will be kept in encrypted form and no one can access it without user’s approval.
Blessing for less educated users and elderly
This new feature is especially useful for rural or elderly users who have trouble using smartphones or remembering PIN. They only have to put a thumb or come in front of the phone’s camera screen, and will be paid. In markets, shops, or villages where digital payments are still low, biometric UPI payments can bring major changes.
