President’s rule extended for six months in Manipur

President’s rule in Manipur has been extended for six months. This expansion will be effective from 13 August 2025. Union Home Minister Amit Shah moved a resolution in the Rajya Sabha in this regard, which was accepted by the House.

The notice presented in the House said, “This house approves the proclamation issued by the President on 13 February 2025 under Article 356 of the Constitution to continue the announcement on 13 February 2025 from 13 August 2025 to an effective six months and periods.”

Violence started in 2023

Violence in the state began in 2023 when a ‘tribal solidarity march’ was held against the High Court order. President’s rule was implemented for the first time on 13 February 2025 in Manipur. This decision was taken due to long -standing caste violence and administrative failure in the state.

Government trying to stabilize law and order

Although efforts for peace and reconciliation are still going on, security conditions in many parts of Manipur still remain tense. During this period, the central government is planning to assess the possibilities of stabilizing law and order and holding assembly elections in future.

In fact, in this regard, the House accepted the notice and passed the resolution, stating, “This House approves the presence of Manipur on 13 February 2025 under Article 356 of the Constitution to implement the announcement for the next six months from 13 August 2025 to the next six months.

President’s rule was imposed in Manipur in February

Please inform that President’s rule was implemented in Manipur on 13 February this year. The then CM of the state N Biren Singh resigned from his post, after which President’s rule had to be implemented in the state.

It is worth noting that the President’s rule can only be imposed in the state for six months. The period of President’s rule in Manipur was also going to be completed on 31 August. Earlier, President’s rule has been extended to six months before in the state.

Significantly, in May 2023, ethnic violence spread in Manipur between Kuki and Maetai communities. So far 260 people have lost their lives in this struggle. Apart from this, more than 1000 people had to leave their homes and shift to other places.

Efforts were being made to control this ethnic violence. Meanwhile, in February this year, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned in February this year. After this, on 13 February 2025, the central government dissolved the assembly in the state and imposed President’s rule.
