New Delhi
The threat of floods in the capital Delhi has increased. The water level of Yamuna river reached 204.40 meters on the Old Railway Bridge at 9 am on Saturday, which is a slightly below the danger mark from 204.50 meters. Taking this seriously, the administration has instructed all the concerned departments to be vigilant to deal with the flood -like situation.
Why is the water level rising?
“The main reason for increasing the water level of Yamuna is to release a large amount of water every hour from Wazirabad and Hathinikund barrage,” said an official at the Central Flood Control Room. Apart from this, the rains in the upper catchment areas of Haryana and Uttarakhand have also played an important role in increasing the water level of the river.
Water situation from barrage
According to the flood control department, about 30,800 cusecs of water is being released from Wazirabad Barrage and 25,000 cusecs of water from Hathinikund barrage. This water usually takes 48 to 50 hours to reach Delhi. Despite the release of small amounts of water from the upper areas, the water level in Delhi is rising rapidly.
What is the danger mark?
The warning level for Yamuna in Delhi is 204.50 meters, while the danger mark is at 205.30 meters. If the water level reaches 206 meters, the process of carrying people to safe places in the city will begin. The Old Railway Bridge is an important center of measuring the risk of flow and floods of Yamuna.
Administration preparation
The administration has started taking all necessary steps in view of the possibility of floods. The concerned agencies have been asked to monitor the areas situated on the banks of the river and be ready for an emergency. Appeal has also been made to Delhiites to take precautions around the river and follow the instructions of the administration.
