Election Commission removed 334 non-recognized political parties, major reshuffle in registration list

The Election Commission of India excluded 334 non-recognized political parties from the registered list. Following the Election Commission’s decision, there are currently only 6 national parties and 67 regional parties, while 2,520 registered non-recognized political parties are left.

Apart from BJP and Congress, 6 national parties include Aam Aadmi Party, BSP, CPMI and NPP. 67 major parties like Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal are registered as regional parties in the list of Election Commission.

The Commission said in a press release that the political parties excluded from the list, along with the relevant provisions of the Income Tax Act-1961 and Election System (Reservation and Allocation) Order-1968, will not be eligible to get any benefits under the provisions of Section 29B and Section 29C of the Public Representation Act-1951. However, the Election Commission has given 30 days to appeal to political parties excluded from the list.

According to the press release, in June 2025, the ECI had directed the Chief Electoral Officers of the states and union territories to initiate the process of verification of 345 non-recognized political parties. Under this process, the authorities investigated these parties, issued condolence notices and gave them an opportunity to speak through personal hearing.

Based on the reports of the officials, 334 out of 345 parties did not follow the conditions. The Commission has removed these 334 non-recognized political parties from the list after considering the recommendations of all facts and officials.

The Election Commission said that now 2,520 parties are left out of a total of 2,854 non-recognized political parties.

The Election Commission said in a press release, “National, regional and non-recognized political parties are registered under Section 29A of the Representation of the People of Election Commission of India Act-1951. There is a rule regarding the registration of political parties that if a party does not contest elections for 6 years consecutive years, its name is removed from the registration list.
