Now there are only 6 national parties in the country. Among them, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of the country, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Chief Opposition Congress and National Pipulas Party (NPP).
The Election Commission of India, while talking about cleaning the election system, has canceled the registration of 334 political parties. There are only 6 national parties in the country. Apart from this, the number of regional parties has come down to 67. Let us tell you that political parties in India are registered in the Election Commission (ECI) under the provisions of Section 29A of the Representation of the Public Representation Act, 1951.
The guidelines issued for registration of political parties provide a provision that if a party does not contest elections for 6 consecutive years, it will be removed from the list of registered parties. Additionally, under Section 29A of the Representation of the Public Representation Act, 1951, the party has to give details of its name, address, names of officials etc. at the time of registration. It is mandatory to inform the Election Commission without any delay in any kind of change in them.
Earlier, in June 2025, the Election Commission had directed the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of the states and union territories to investigate 345 parties. The Chief Electoral Officers investigated this, a show cause notice was issued to these parties. Each party was given an opportunity to present its case through individual hearing.
After this, on the basis of the report of the Chief Electoral Officers, it was found that out of a total of 345 parties, 334 are not following the fixed conditions. The remaining cases have been sent back to the Chief Electoral Officers for re -investigation. The Commission canceled the registration of 334 parties after considering all the facts and recommendations of Chief Electoral Officers.
Now only 6 national parties in India
After the new action of the Election Commission, there are now only 6 national parties in the country.
