New Delhi
US President Donald Trump has announced a heavy fine on India for buying oil from Russia. After this, India made it clear that it would not come under any pressure. However, if India stops buying crude oil from Russia for some reason, then crude oil prices will rise in the international market. This will affect America more than India. Because, America is the second largest oil importer in the world.
Energy expert Narendra Taneja says, if the penalty of crude oil in the international market increases due to penalty for purchasing Russia oil from the US, then America itself will not remain untouched. Oil prices will also increase there. Also inflation will increase. India will also have an impact on it, but now it has said to continue buying oil from Russia.
Petroleum sectors believe that it is not easy to stop purchasing completely crude oil on Russia. Because, all countries take decisions keeping in mind their needs. If the supply stops when any pressure or Russia’s crude oil is expensive, then it will affect the whole world. Due to the difference in demand and supply, the price of crude oil can go from 100 to $ 120 per barrel.
Millions of barrel exports daily
Russia exports 50 million barrels of crude oil daily. India imports 33 to 40% of its needs from Russia. In such a situation, the price of crude oil increases in the global market, then it is bound to affect India. Because, India is the third major importer after the US in terms of crude oil.
India has options
India buys crude oil from more than three dozen countries. In such a situation, this oil can be supplied from another country, but the increase in crude oil prices in the international market can increase pressure on petroleum companies. However, it is unlikely that companies will directly put this load on consumers.
Fierce oil imports from Russia
India imposed economic sanctions on Russia after India started the Russia-Ukraine War in February 2022. After this, taking advantage of the reduction in the prices of Russian oil, started buying cheap oil. In May 2025, India imported 1.96 million barrels per day from Russia, about 38% of its total oil imports.
India will continue to buy oil from Russia
Indian oil companies will buy oil from Russia, bypassing US President Donald Trump’s threat. Government sources claimed this on Saturday. At the same time, earlier Trump had said that I have heard that India has stopped taking oil from Russia. Talking to the media on Saturday, Trump said that this is a good decision, but I am not aware of what is happening in this matter.
Sources in the Government of India claimed that India had tied up with Russia for a long time for oil purchases. In such a situation, it is not possible that oil purchases stop in one night. The US newspaper New York Times has claimed this in its report quoting two officials. Officials said, there has been no change in the policy of the Government of India to buy oil from Russia. The government has not given any direction to Indian companies for not buying oil from Russia.
