New Delhi
The central government can issue a notification regarding the next census on 16 June. However, the process of ‘Census-2027’ on the ground will start in 2026 and thus it will be delayed by six years, for which Kovid epidemic can be held responsible. Because, the census work then went on hanging. This time the census is politically at least two important things hanging. One is that according to the law, the census to be held after 2026 is the basis of re -delimitation of the constituencies. Because, according to the population in the country, the number of public representatives is very low and big inequalities are emerging in the population data of the constituencies. On the other hand, Parliament has arranged 33% women reservation in Lok Sabha and state assemblies, it is also possible only when the constituencies are renewed. But, say in current circumstances It is difficult that all this will be possible for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
According to the Central Government’s announcement, the census can begin from April 1, 2026. The last census took place in 2011, according to this work was to be done in 2021 itself. The government has decided on 1 March 2027 as a reference date for the new census. Meaning, this will be the date for census data. However, it is not yet mentioned when the census figures will be released. In such a situation, the biggest question is whether all the necessary figures related to the census will come before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections? If government sources are to be believed, then the answer is not. For example, a senior official has said that caste figures can be released in three years. However, it is unlikely that caste calculation will be the basis of reservation.
It took about two years to release data in the last census
If we look at the previous census, it took about 2 years to release the final population calculation figures. However, it remains to be seen whether the government tells any date when the census figures are likely to come. Because, with the use of better technology and digital data, the census is no longer likely to take as much time as it used to be.
Nearly three and a half years were spent in previous delimitation
It is to be assumed that the census figures come soon and the delimitation commission starts its work before the 2029 election, even if it may take a long time for delimitation work. For example, after the 2001 census, the delimitation commission was formed in 2002. He made the basis of the same census data and it took roughly three and a half years to complete the work from its formation and completed the work in 2007, which came into effect from 2008. Meaning, the 2009 Lok Sabha elections on its side were implemented.
Southern states are apprehensive about decreasing seats in delimitation
If you look politically, the South Indian states are already concerned about the delimitation of this time. He is afraid that he has done a lot of work on population control and kept it under great control. But, if the population is the basis of delimitation, their Lok Sabha seats may decrease and states like Bihar and UP can benefit from it as more seats. Therefore, there is also heavy opposition to delimitation work.
The government also has to see that this issue may not become the reason for major disputes in North and South Indian states. The Center has a BJP -led government, which is based on the support of the ruling party TDP of Andhra Pradesh. In such a situation, it will not be politically easy for the Modi government to grow rapidly. After seeing all these circumstances, it seems that it is difficult to work before the 2034 Lok Sabha elections.
