Madhya Pradesh has made a new record in terms of tourism in the year 2024. This year, about 13.41 crore people came to visit the state, which is 20% more than 2023. It includes big names like Ujjain, Khajuraho, Gwalior. There was a wave of devotees in Ujjain for Mahakal Darshan. New projects like Mahakal Lok also attracted people a lot. 7.32 crore people arrived in Ujjain alone this year, which is 39% more than last year.
Talking about Khajuraho, it has emerged as the first choice of foreign tourists. The ancient sculpture and temples involved in the World Heritage have drawn people from India and abroad. In the year 2024, 33,131 foreign tourists arrived here, which is more than sites like Gwalior and Orchha. It is clear that Madhya Pradesh is now becoming special for foreign tourists, not only native.

1. Tremendous boom in religious tourism
In 2024, the religious places of Madhya Pradesh attracted 10.7 crore tourists from across the country. This figure is 21.9% higher than last year, which suggests that tourism related to faith has now become a big power of the state.
2. Ujjain becomes the largest tourist center
Ujjain emerged as the largest religious center of this year due to the inauguration of Mahakal Lok and Mahakal Temple. There was a tremendous jump in the number of devotees, which also benefited the local trade and hotel industry.
3. Chitrakoot, Maihar’s increasing popularity
Religious places like Chitrakoot, Maihar and Omkareshwar were also included in the favorite list of tourists this year. The combination of faith, mythological importance and natural beauty made these places special.
4. Trend towards cultural heritage
Cultural heritage of Madhya Pradesh such as Khajuraho, Gwalior and Bhojpur attracted about 80 lakh tourists in 2024. This place became one of the best way to feel history, architecture and heritage.
5. Three times tourist growth in Gwalior
Gwalior achieved a new place in tourism this year. The heritage related to Gwalior Fort, palaces and music caught people’s attention and more than 9 lakh tourists arrived here, which is three times more than the previous year.
6. First choice of wildlife lovers
Madhya Pradesh is called Tiger, Cheetah and Gharial State and in 2024 this thing also proved to be true. 12 National Parks, 25 sanctuaries and 9 tiger reserves wooed environmental lovers.
7. Withdrawal of cheetahs in Kuno
The return of African cheetahs in Kuno Palpur National Park caught the attention of not only the country but the world. This project was successful in bringing Madhya Pradesh to international wildlife tourism map.
8. Kanha Jungle Safari thrill
There was a huge crowd of tourists in Kanha and Bandhavgarh national parks. People arrived here to see the tigers closely, get peace between jungle safari and nature.
9. Magic of Pachmarhi’s litigants
2.87 lakh tourists arrived at Pachmarhi this year. Green hills, tracking trails, waterfalls and caves make this place a mini hill station of Madhya Pradesh.
10. Enthusiasm also showed enthusiasm in urban tourism
Tourism also gained momentum in cities like Bhopal, Indore and Jabalpur. Especially in Indore, which is famous for cleanliness and catering, 1.02 crore tourists arrived there.
11. Chanderi became the choice of film world
The trend of film shooting has increased in historical towns like Chanderi and Maheshwar. Here films like ‘Stree 2’ were shot, due to which the film tourism of these places is also increasing rapidly.
What did the chief tourism secretary say
Principal Secretary Tourism Shiva Shekhar Shukla said, ‘Madhya Pradesh is a rich and diverse state of India in terms of tourism. The cultural heritage of the state, natural wealth, historical heritage and wildlife diversity provide a complete experience to tourists. This is the reason why the number of tourists in the year 2024 has broken records.
Most tourists reached Ujjain
In the year 2024, along with the Mahakal temple in Ujjain, Mahakal Lok also has the highest number of tourists. In the year 2024, 1.67 lakh foreign tourists also visited Madhya Pradesh. The highest 33 thousand 131 foreigners arrived in Khajuraho. At the same time, 10 thousand 823 foreign tourists arrived in Gwalior and 13 thousand 960 in Orchha. The number of foreign tourists also increased in urban tourism. Which includes 9964 foreign tourists in Indore and 1,522 in Bhopal.
Visit in wild areas
29 thousand 192 foreign tourists came to Maidhavgarh, 19 thousand 148 in Kanha, 12 thousand 762 in Panna and 11 thousand 272 in Pench. Most foreign tourists have reached Khajuraho in Chhatarpur district. The new center of faith of the country attracted 10.7 crore tourists in 2024, which is 21.9% higher than in the year 2023.
More tourists came to religious places
Out of the top 10 tourist destinations in the state, 6 religious places are included. Ujjain was at the forefront of this list with 7.32 crore tourists, which is 39% higher than 5.28 crores in the year 2023. Chitrakoot also visited more than 1 crore tourists, which is 33% higher than 90 lakhs in the year 2023. 1.33 crore tourists arrived in Maihar, 40 lakh in Amarkantak, 26 lakh in Salkanpur and 24 lakh in Omkareshwar. Projects like Mahakal Lok, Omkareshwar Mahalok, Shri Ram Vanagaman Path, Devi Lok, Raja Ram Lok, Hanuman have strengthened religious tourism spiritually and economically.
Tourism is also increasing in these cities
Gwalior saw a 3 -fold increase in the number of tourists. Where more than 9 lakh tourists arrived, which is several times more than 3.69 lakhs in 2023. 4.89 lakh tourists arrived in Khajuraho, 35.91 lakh in Bhojpur and 13.53 lakh tourists in Maheshwar. UNESCO has recently included Bhojpur in its tentative list and has recognized Gwalior as ‘Creative City of Music’. There are now a total of 18 UNESCO heritage in 3 permanent and 15 tenture list in the state. The permanent list includes the temple group of Khajuraho, the Bhimbetka caves and the Sanchi Stupa.
